“...earnestly contend for the faith
which was once delivered unto the saints” Jude vs3
Now different versions of
the bible put this verse in different forms, for instance, we have it as “...fight
for the faith...” In one and “...defend the faith...” in another.
As a form of introduction into this
subject proper, I will like us to have a close look at this verse of scripture
in all its various form.
We can’t fault God in anyway because
He doesn’t make mistakes, but I will want to establish the fact that the words
used in the various interpretation of this scripture were intentionally and
carefully selected to drive down the points more clearly so as to communicate
the real intent of the writer.
I will pick on three words from the
scripture above, break them down and then we move on to other issues.
Contend/Defend/Fight
If faith is the battle line of the last day then that’s the
opposition’s target, little wonder scripture says that the kingdom of God
suffers violence and only the violent lays hold on it by force, Matthew 11vs12.
And because faith is a force it will take a force to lay hold on it.
However, for every contention there
is need for strength and experience which is why the scripture calls us
soldiers of Christ and admonishes us in 2Timothy 2vs3 saying that we should
endure hardship as good soldiers of Christ. We are also addressed as athletes
in 1corinthians 9vs24 and as ambassadors for Christ in 2corithians 5vs20.
Athletes contends for a prize,
soldiers fight for their nations while ambassadors defends the course of their
nations in others nations. Now one or two things tie all these three together
and that’s their passion, enthusiasm and struggle to win at all cost. Apostle
Paul said ...so run, 1corinthians 9vs24, meaning that you are not the only one
involved, it’s not a time to cat walk or pose, contention is a struggle and the
grand prize goes to the winner, the conqueror. He goes further to admonish us
to fight the good fight of faith 1Timothy 6vs12. It is a good fight because it
is a conquest for the life of God and it’s God’s utmost expectation that we win
that’s why He sent His son to win the real conquest on our behalf and give us
the crown. That’s why we are more than conquerors.
Conclusively, to beef up our passion as contenders, defenders and fighters, we are provided with armours, Ephesians 6vs10-20 for us to remain standing and strong in the lord as we contend for the crown. God bless you.
